Neural correlates of maintaining one’s political beliefs in the face of counterevidence

Abstract: People often discount evidence that contradicts their firmly held beliefs. However, little is known about the neural mechanisms that govern this behavior. We used neuroimaging to investigate the neural systems involved in maintaining belief in the face of counterevidence, presenting 40 liberals with arguments that contradicted their strongly held political and non-political views. Challenges to political beliefs produced increased activity in the default mode network—a set of interconnected structures associat… Show more

“…Thirdly, the present study showed change in the theory of mind network after a brief psychiatric treatment. This change was observed in the neuronal regions associated with treatment of complex information, resistance to change in beliefs (i.e., the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex; Kaplan, Gimbel, & Harris, 2016) and the theory of mind (i.e., the orbitofrontal cortex, the nodal part of the medio-dorsal thalamus; Mier, Lis, Esslinger, Sauer, Hagenhoff, Ulferts, Gallhofer, & Kirsch, 2013;Mitchell, Chakraborty, 2013;Singer et al, 2009). Some of these regions are particularly affected in socio-cognitive tasks in patients with BPD (Mier et al, 2013;Schmahl et al, 2014;Schnell & Herpertz, 2018).…”

“…Den producerar känslor, så som upplevelser av hot, oro och ångest. Likaså aktiverades amygdalan, som arbetar med tillit respektive skepticism (Kaplan, Gimbel & Harris, 2016). De här mekanismerna skapar motstånd mot idéer som hotar vår identitetsuppfattning eller vår kollektiva tillhörighet, ett motstånd som i sin tur återbekräftar och stärker de värderingar man försöker skydda.…”
