“…Larsson addressed the odd‐even melting‐point problem for long‐chains “where the molecules form layers, and the layers are stacked so that terminal planes of methyl groups are in contact.” He limited his consideration to situations where the series is “homologously isomorphous,” that is, different in structure only at the interface, and he pointed out that alternation of melting point is expected only when the zig‐zag chains are oriented so that the terminal CH 2 −CH 3 bond makes a different angle with the interface plane for odd than for even members. He did not specify which angle is preferred or why, though it is easy to infer that terminal bonds parallel to the interface give tighter packing, certainly within the layer, and probably between layers, as well.…”
