In this paper we introduce the Energy-Efficient Multiple Access (EE-MA) protocol for wireless networks where nodes participate in a distributed election to gain interference-free access to the wireless channel. By taking advantage of the information used in the distributed elections, nodes can infer if they are not the intended receiver of a transmission and set their radios in sleeping state to save energy. To save even more energy and avoid false positives derived from the nature of the protocol, EE-MA also implements a sleeping scheme where nodes switch to the sleeping state if no message is received during the beginning of a time-slot. We show that the individual channel access plans computed by the proposed distributed algorithm are collision-free at the intended receivers and that intended receivers are always in receiving state. We also present a simulation-based performance analysis that shows that EE-MA outperforms a state of the art election-based channel access protocol in terms of energy efficiency with no cost in terms of network capacity. Simulations also show that EE-MA outperforms 802.11 contention based protocol in terms of goodput and channel access delay.

When evaluating the performance of QoS protocols, a number of factors have a major impact on the results. Notably, QoS is emphasized when mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) are employed into aerospace fields. Some of these parameters are a particular manifestation of characteristics of the MANET environment, such as mobility. Indeed, our proposal is a novel multipoint relays scheme based on hybrid cost function taking into account QoS criteria and avoiding mobility effect of nodes, especially those selected as MPRs. A comprehensive simulation study was conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme. Performance results show that RQMPR outperforms existing MPR heuristic adopted in the ad hoc routing protocols OLSR and QOLSR, in terms of packet delivery and average end-to-end delay.

TDMA MAC protocol in MANET requires precise network synchronization between nodes though network topology changes continuously due to node mobility and the effect of propagation environment. In this paper we propose in-band cross-layer network synchronization architecture for TDMA-based MANETs. In the proposed architecture TDMA MAC protocol and proactive routing protocol cooperate closely to rapidly detect network partition and merge caused by node mobility and to precisely maintain network synchronization. We also implement the proposed synchronization architecture in OPNET simulator and evaluate the performance of it in various simulation scenarios.
