Net-Metering and Self-Consumption Analysis for Direct PV Groundwater Pumping in Agriculture: A Spanish Case Study

Abstract: International policies mainly that are focused on energy-dependence reduction and climate change objectives have been widely proposed by most developed countries over the last years. These actions aim to promote the integration of renewables and the reduction of emissions in all sectors. Among the different sectors, agriculture emerges as a remarkable opportunity to integrate these proposals. Indeed, this sector accounts for 10% of the total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the EU, representing 1.5% of gross … Show more

“…The integration of PV power plants into groundwater pumping installations was recently considered as a suitable alternative. Rubio-Aliaga et al [16] presented a feasibility study with a multidimensional analysis of PV solar power systems connected to the grid as a groundwater pumping solution, including net-metering conditions and benefit estimations, in Castilla-La Mancha (Spain). Different surplus energy sale scenarios were analyzed based on crops typical in this location, the corresponding annual water requirements, and common grouping areas.…”

“…The SIMUS method is proposed by the authors to order the alternatives. With this aim, a hybrid method based on Linear Programming (LP) and Simple Additive Weighting (SAW) and on the Outranking procedure [4,5,6] is sequentially applied. SIMUS starts from an initial matrix.…”

“…Nowadays, most of the commercial water pumps equipment work with the supply of either electricity from the grid or from Diesel engines. However, PV Water Pumping (PVWP) [1][2][3][4] has been marginally implemented; being considered as an electric energy source mainly in remote locations or through hybrid solutions. There are four different ways for managing water pumping, with three options or alternatives each, as illustrated in Figure 1.…”
