Nesfatin-1 and other hormone alterations in polycystic ovary syndrome

Abstract: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is commonly characterised by obesity, insulin resistance (IR), hyperandrogenemia and hirsutism. Nesfatin-1 a recently discovered hormone, acts upon energy balance, glucose metabolism, obesity and probably gonadal functions. This study was to evaluate the circulating levels of nesfatin-1 in patients with PCOS (n = 30) and in age and body mass index (BMI)-matched controls (n = 30). PCOS patients had significantly lower levels of nesfatin-1 (0.88 ± 0.36 ng/mL) than healthy control… Show more

“…In contrast to that study, Deniz and cols. revealed a negative correlation between nesfatin-1 and BMI, fasting blood glucose, and HOMA-IR in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome, an endocrine disorder commonly presenting with obesity and insulin resistance as well as hyperandrogenemia and hirsutism (20). Ding and cols.…”

“…Hypothalamic satiety peptides that are known to be effective on energy balance, obesity and glucose metabolism are also affecting gonadal functions, having both physiologic and pathologic regulatory roles on the ovaries [20]. Previously, low nesfatin-1 levels were found to be associated with delayed puberty in female rats and nesfatin-1 injection had dramatic effects on the levels of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) [16,21].…”

“…Li et al (21) stated that plasma nesfatin-1 levels were lower in adults with type 2 diabetes when compared to the healthy adults. Deniz et al (28) determined that serum nesfatin-1 levels were lower in 30 women with polycystic ovary syndrome who had insulin resistance compared to the control group. In our study, although statistically insignificant, fasting and postprandial serum nesfatin-1 levels in the insulin-resistant and MetS group were lower compared to the non-resistant group.…”

“…There is no study evaluating the fasting and postprandial nesfatin-1 levels in children with MetS. When we considered the studies that claimed to determine a correlation between nesfatin-1 and insulin resistance, we considered that, in particular, insulin resistance has a partial negative effect on nesfatin-1 increase in obese children (7,27,28). Furthermore, circulating concentrations of nesfatin-1 were not changed by an oral glucose load, in spite of a significant increase in insulin concentration in the blood.…”
