Nerve ultrasound in electrophysiologically verified tarsal tunnel syndrome

Abstract: This study shows that nerve ultrasound is abnormal in all cases of electrophysiologically verified TTS. The pattern of nerve abnormality is varied. This, and the fact that in the majority of patients causation was identified, suggests nerve ultrasound should form part of standard work-up for TTS. Muscle Nerve 53: 906-912, 2016.

“…NCS may show abnormalities in the muscle action potentials of the abductor hallucis and abductor digit minimi, but the sensitivity is low. Conversely, medial and lateral plantar NCS or needle examination of the foot muscles have poor specificity (Samarawickrama et al, 2016, Tawfik et al, 2016).…”

“…Ultrasonography can show enlargement of the tibial nerve distal to the tarsal tunnel compared with a level proximal to the tunnel with a sensitivity of 61% and specificity of 74%. 77,78 Ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging are of similar accuracy in diagnosing Morton's neuroma. 79,80…”
