The study was designed to compare the biochemical characteristics of neonates transported by qualified transport team, before and after stabilization, interventions required and setbacks during these transports. Prospective cohort study of all neonatal transports during a period of 13 months from various maternity and pediatric centers was conducted; 151 babies who fulfilled the criteria were included in the study. 58% of babies < 32 wks were hypothermic, 21% of the total babies were hypotensive and a total of 25% of the babies were hypoxic at the referral hospital. Intubation was done by the transport team in 23% of babies and 25 % of the babies were transported on a ventilator. There was a significant improvement in the clinical condition of all these babies in relation to temperature control, sugar control, oxygenation and blood pressure after stabilization.

Transport teams have evolved into mobile ICUs capable of delivering state-of-the-art critical care during pediatric and neonatal transport. The most recent document regarding the practice of pediatric/neonatal transport is more than a decade old. The following article details changes in the practice of interfacility transport over the past decade and expresses the consensus views of leaders in the field of transport medicine, including the American Academy of Pediatrics’ Section on Transport Medicine.

Le transport interhospitalier d'un nouveau-né est une période à risque de déstabilisation de l'état de l'enfant. La décision de transfert est d'ordre médical et demande une analyse des risques et des bénéfices par un médecin pédiatre ou une sage-femme qui connaît parfaitement le niveau de transport requis (médicalisé, infirmier, ambulancier) et les protocoles mis en place. Le transport sans aucun accompagnement médical ou paramédical est rarement adapté à la période néonatale. Le niveau de transport infirmier interhospitalier (TIIH) concerne des nouveau-nés dont l'état est stabilisé, transférés vers un service néonatal pour poursuite des soins ou pour rapprochement familial. Nous rapportons notre expérience de mise en place des TIIH néonatals dans le bassin de vie de la métropole de Lille avec les protocoles mis à jour depuis 2006. Mots clés Transport néonatal infirmierAbstract The interhospital transport of newborn is a risky period in terms of destabilization of the state of the child. The transfer decision is taken from a medical point of view and requires a risk and benefit analysis by a pediatrician or midwife who perfectly knows the required level of transport (medicalized nursing, paramedic) and protocol set-up. A transfer without any medical or paramedical support is rarely adapted to the neonatal period. The level of a nurse interhospital transport (TIIH) is for newborns whose condition is stabilized and they require a transfer to a neonatal unit for further care or for family reunion. This is based on our experience in setting up TIIH for neonatals in the area of Lille equipped with better protocols since 2006.
