Transported Neonates by a Specialist Team— How STABLE are they

Abstract: The study was designed to compare the biochemical characteristics of neonates transported by qualified transport team, before and after stabilization, interventions required and setbacks during these transports. Prospective cohort study of all neonatal transports during a period of 13 months from various maternity and pediatric centers was conducted; 151 babies who fulfilled the criteria were included in the study. 58% of babies < 32 wks were hypothermic, 21% of the total babies were hypotensive and a total of… Show more

“…8,9,10 The mean stabilization time (51.63min) was more than in transports studied by Kumar where average time spent on stabilization was 38 min, but less than that reported by Leslie in Nottingham where average Stabilizing time was 105 min. 11,12 52.4% of all transported patients were ventilated at some point. This is important in planning requirements for ventilators in NICUs having transport facility.…”

“…[ 25 ] Our findings are also in the same direction, suggesting importance of prior stabilization before referral, underscored repeatedly in the past. [ 25 26 27 ] Stabilization of newborn, along with advices for maintaining airways and thermoregulation by Kangaroo Mother Care during transport form such a framework which could improve the immediate outcome after admission. Ensuring vital parameters before and during transport is probably the weakest link in neonatal health scenario of our country.…”

“…Bien que des programmes de formation du ministère de la Santé existent, une enquête SONU (soins obstétricaux et néonatals d'urgence) récemment menée au Sénégal a mis en exergue de nombreuses carences, liées au manque de matériel adapté au nouveau-né et à l'absence de formation pratique, initiale ou continue des prestataires [18]. Les soins inadaptés en pré-transfert ont été identifiés comme facteurs significatifs de mortalité des nouveau-nés transférés [13,19].…”
