Neonatal screening by chest circumference and a study of relationship between birthweight and other anthropometric parameters

Abstract: Aims and objectives of the study: To record the chest circumference of the newborns as well as to find out the relationship between birth weight and other anthropometric parameters like head circumference, mid arm circumference and chest circumference. Methods: This observational study includes a total no. of 2050 consecutive live singleton infants born between 28 to 42 weeks gestation in a 1 year period. Anthropometric parameters such as birth weight, crown heel length, mid arm circumference, head circumferen… Show more

“…The correlation coefficient of chest circumference to birth weight is significant which is comparable to studies done by Chandrashekhar T Sreeramareddy et al (r value = 0.553) and Naik DB et al (r value = 0.70) but is less than in studies by Shastry et al (r value = 0.80). 12,19,18 The correlation of chest circumference to gestational age is comparable to studies done by Narendra KS et al with r value of 0.523, Bhatia BD et al (r value = 0.495) and Sharma JN et al (r value 0.649). 16,20,21 But there is paucity of correlation data for separate groups (SGA, AGA and LGA as well as preterm, term and post-term).…”

“…19 Shastry CKR et al, found chest circumference along with mid arm circumference to be the alternate parameters to identify low birth weight babies. 20 Calf circumference was suggested to be the surrogate parameter for early detection of low birth weight babies by Suneetha B et al 21…”
