Study of correlation between gestational age and new-born foot length and chest circumference

Abstract: Background: Globally, in 2015, 1 million children died on first day of their life. The neonatal mortality rate is declining less rapidly than the mortality rate for children between 1month and 5 years of age. Thus, contribution of the neonatal mortality to the under-five deaths is increasing. Usually as average income of a country increases, it leads to decline in child mortality yet some countries in the fast lane for global economic growth such as India have been in the slower lane for child mortality reduct… Show more

“…Gestational age and birth weight as predicted from the last menstrual period have traditionally been used as strong indicators of prematurity and neonatal death. 11 A reliable model development to estimate the fetal weight at a given gestational age from maternal and fetus parameters would facilitate intervention plans for health care providers to prevent the risk of low birth weight delivery. [12][13][14] This model development at different gestational ages is crucial for developing countries where there is limited access to ultrasound machines and skilled personnel.…”

“…Whereas the mean foot length for term SGA, AGA, LGA were 7.07 cm, 7.7 cm and 8.71 cm respectively. 10 The Kulkarni et al found a mean foot length of preterm neonates, varied from 4.6 cm to 6.89 cm, the foot length of the term neonate varied from 6.99 cm to 7.58 cm. 11 The Gohil et al analysis found that the mean foot length of the preterm was 6.56±0.43 cm, the term SGA was 7.13±0.26 cm and the term AGA was 7.6±0.33 cm.…”

“…The relationship and statistical treatment of neonatal baby birth weight and other characteristics with gestational age and other explanatory factors has been the subject of research at least since 1900 1-4 and is so even today. 5-8 The emphasis of such studies has been on charts of birth weights and gestational age as well as graphs of actual and smooth percentile curves. 8-20 The central tendency and dispersion parameters were often represented by the mean and standard deviation, respectively, without any prior statistical treatment of the data.…”
