“…Current research also included meconium aspiration syndrome, because it is directly connected to the chain of events associated with perinatal asphyxia (12) , highlighting that this entity is classified as other respiratory conditions of the newborn as basic cause of death by the WHO (7) . Responsible for 10% of cases of respiratory failure (13) , aspiration of meconium caused the death of practically one baby in every five early neonatal avoidable deaths in the state of São Paulo, stressing the high mortality rate in emerging countries such as in China, where the syndrome was responsible for 39% of deaths from respiratory failure in the early neonatal period (14) .…”

“…Meconium aspiration syndrome (MAS) occurs in 1.3% of live births and symptoms range from mild respiratory distress syndrome with auto recovery to progressive respiratory failure, complications and death, and in the most severe cases, respiratory distress, hypoxia, hypercapnia and respiratory acidosis increase, requiring intensive care and mechanical ventilation (1)(2)(3), and 10 to 40% of cases result in infant's death (4,5).…”

“…[1] HRF, usually secondary to meconium aspiration, pneumonia with or without sepsis, respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) and primary pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN), is the most common reason for routine mechanical ventilation. However, long-term ventilator support may lead to acute and chronic lung injury.…”
