Nematicidal Activity of the Essential Oil of Three Varieties of Tagetes minuta from Argentina

Abstract: Essential oils composition of three Tagetes minuta varieties and a wild population (WP) from Argentina and their in vitro and in vivo nematicidal activity against root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne javanica, are described. All T. minuta EOs tested were very active against nematode juveniles (J2), but the strongest nematicidal effects were exhibited by the TmV3 variety oil, characterized by a high content of (E)-ocimenone. High nematode egg hatching suppression (> 90%) was induced by TmV3 EO after five days of inc… Show more

“…The chemical compounds (E)-ocimeone, ethyl octanoate and terpenes were shown to be nematicides (Massuh et al, 2017;Abdel-Rahman et al, 2019), and also these same compounds were found in the PEO and this confirmed the nematicidal effect. of the PEO in the J2 of M. javanica.…”

“…It is worth mentioning of the compounds identified, 77.8% were esters and 22.2% monoterpenes. Some studies under laboratory conditions (Abdel-Rahman et al, 2019;Ferreira & De Paula Júnior, 2019;Ribeiro et al, 2012;Lopes, 2017;Massuh et al, 2017;Silva et al, 2021) demonstrate that terpenes, (E)-ocimeone, ethyl octanoate and phenolic acid have nematicidal action by reducing the rate of eclosion and cause the death of J2 of Meloidogyne spp., corroborating with the compounds present in the pequi peel and pulp found in the present study.…”

“…(E)-Ocimenone, the principal component of Tagetes minuta essential oil, may play a major role in nematicidal activity against M. javanica [45]. Furthermore, another study reported that dihydrotagetone and (Z)-β-ocimene, which are also components of the essential oil of T. minuta, have certain nematicidal activities against M. incognita [46].…”

“…In addition, several other constituents of EOs (limonene, ( Z )-β-ocimene, dihydrotagetone, ( E )-tagetone, ( Z )-tagetone, ( Z )-ocimenone, and ( E )-ocimenone), have been characterised from T. minuta . These were nematicidal against J2s of M. javanica , with LC 90/72h of 0.24–0.45 mg/ml, depending on the cultivar of T. minuta ( Massuh et al, 2017 ).…”
