Indices of mood, mood regulation expectancies and everyday executive functioning were examined in adult current smokers and never-smokers of both genders in Australia (N = 97), where anti-smoking campaigns have dramatically reduced smoking prevalence and acceptability, and in China (N = 222), where smoking prevalence and public acceptance of smoking remain high. Dependent measures included the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS-21), the Negative Mood Regulation (NMR) expectancies scale, the Frontal Systems Behavior Scale (FrSBe), the Fagerström Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND) and the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT). Multivariate analyses of covariance (MANCOVAs) controlling for demographic and recruitment related variables revealed highly significant differences between current smokers and never-smokers in both countries such that smokers indicated worse moods and poorer functioning than never-smokers on all dependent measures. Chinese smokers scored significantly worse on all dependent measures than Australian smokers whereas Chinese and Australian never-smokers did not differ on any of the same measures. Although nicotine dependence level as measured by FTND was significantly higher in Chinese than Australian smokers and was significantly correlated with all other dependent measures, inclusion of FTND scores as another covariate in MANCOVA did not eliminate the highly significant differences between Chinese and Australian smokers. Results are interpreted in light of the relative ease of taking up and continuing smoking in China compared to Australia today.

Recent research indicates that protective behavioral strategies (PBS)—previously established as effective self-regulating tools for reducing alcohol risk among college students—may be especially useful for students with poor mental health, who are shown to be at heightened risk for alcohol-related harm. The current study examined the moderating influence of mental health (depression and anxiety severity), gender, and race (White, Asian) in the relationship between PBS use and alcohol-related negative consequences. Participants were 1,782 undergraduate students from two West Coast universities who reported past month incidence of heavy episodic drinking. Students reported on their drinking, experience of alcohol-related consequences, use of PBS, and depression and anxiety symptomatology. Overall, results demonstrated that among participants experiencing depression or anxiety, greater PBS utilization was associated with significantly lower levels of alcohol-related consequences, even after controlling for drinking and other predictors. However, findings also revealed important distinctions in the potential effectiveness of PBS by depression/anxiety severity and racial-gender subgroup, such that Asian men with poor mental health appeared to garner unique and substantial benefit (i.e., lesser consequences) from increased PBS use. Further, PBS were found to offer substantial protective benefit for White females, irrespective of mental health. This study points to the potential for targeted PBS-specific skills training and interventions to minimize alcohol-related risks faced by the growing subpopulation of college students experiencing psychological distress, and further highlights important race-gender differentials.

Objetivo. Las dificultades de procesamiento emocional han sido relacionadas con los trastornos de la conducta alimentaria, aunque existe un debate acerca de si anteceden o son consecuencia de ellos. La mayoría de los estudios han sido realizados en pacientes adultas de larga evolución y pocos han incluido pacientes menores. Nuestro estudio compara las dificultades de reconocimiento y regulación emocional en pacientes adultas y adolescentes y pretende discriminar si estos actúan como factores predisponentes y/o de mantenimiento. Método. Se compararon 48 pacientes (27 adultas, 21 adolescentes), con 41 controles sanos (13 adultas, 28 adolescentes) mediante la Escala de Alexitimia de Toronto (TAS-20) y la Escala de Dificultades de Regulación Emocional (DERS). Resultados. Todas las pacientes presentan mayores dificultades en reconocimiento (alexitimia) y regulación emocional que los sujetos control. No se han obtenido diferencias entre pacientes en función del diagnóstico ni del índice de masa corporal (IMC). La intensidad de las dificultades está modulada por edad y gravedad del trastorno. Las pacientes adultas muestran una alexitimia más intensa que las adolescentes, aunque ambos grupos muestran dificultades similares en aceptación y regulación emocional. Las pacientes más graves (adultas y adolescentes) presentan mayor grado de alexitimia, rechazo y descontrol emocional. Conclusiones. Es esencial incluir intervenciones terapéuticas emocionales desde el inicio del tratamiento. Los programas de prevención deben facilitar el reconocimiento, aceptación y regulación emocional de las personas en riesgo.Objective. Though difficulties in emotional processing have been associated to eating disorders (EDs), the debate as to whether these difficulties are antecedents or consequence of EDs remains a contentious issue. Most studies have focused on long-term adult patients, but few studies have assessed adolescent patients. This study compared difficulties in emotional recognition and regulation in adult and adolescent patients to determine if they were predisposing factors and/or maintenance factors. Method. A total of 48 patients (27 adults, 21 adolescents) were compared with 41 healthy controls (13 adults, and 28 adolescents) using the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) and the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS). Results. All of the patients exhibited more difficulties in emotional recognition (alexithymia) and regulation than controls. No differences were observed among patients in terms of body mass index (BMI). The intensity of these difficulties was modulated by age and the severity of the disorder. Alexithymia was more intense in adult patients than in adolescent patients, but both groups showed similar difficulties in emotional acceptance and regulation. Severely affected patients (adult and adolescents) exhibited higher levels of alexithymia, rejection, and emotional dysfunction. Conclusion.
