Negative ion-atmospheric pressure photoionization-mass spectrometry

Abstract: The ionization mechanism in the novel atmospheric pressure photoionization mass spectrometry (APPI-MS) in negative ion mode was studied thoroughly by the analysis of seven compounds in 17 solvent systems. The compounds possessed either gas-phase acidity or positive electron affinity, whereas the solvent systems had different polarities and gas-phase acidities and some of them positive electron affinities. The analytes that possessed gas-phase acidity formed deprotonated ions in proton transfer; in addition, fr… Show more

“…One such application has been further demonstrated in the detection and identification of background ions generated from common LC solvents and APPI dopants. Previous NI-APPI studies by others [27,28] have not detected and/or identified many important background ions from common LC solvents and APPI dopants, partly because the mass spectrometers discriminated against low m/z values. In addition, the resolution of those mass spectrometers was also low, making it difficult to identify the detected ions.…”

“…It offers the ability to ionize compounds that cannot be efficiently ionized by EC, dissociative EC, and proton transfer. The effect of solvents and buffer reagents on ionization was not the focus of this study, as it is predictable according to the ionization mechanisms and has been studied extensively in previous work [8,11]. …”

“…The thermodynamic data of oxygen and nitrogen dioxide from the atmosphere is also given in Table 1. The existence of oxygen in an APPI source plays a key role in negative ion-APPI [11]. …”

“…APPI is a valuable complement to atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI) and electrospray ionization (ESI) and is helping to extend the range of molecules that can be efficiently ionized. However, it is fair to say that the growth in usage of APPI and development of new applications is outpacing work to understand the fundamental mechanism of PI at elevated pressures [10,11,12].…”
