Near‐visible light and UV photoprotection in the treatment of melasma: a double‐blind randomized trial

Abstract: UV-VL sunscreen enhances the depigmenting efficacy of hydroquinone compared with UV-only sunscreen in treatment of melasma. These findings suggest a role for VL in melasma pathogenesis.

“…Table shows the composition (INCI name) and the percentage added of each component to the formulation as well as the respective color index (CI) of the pigments. The pigments present in the formulation under study are iron oxides, which are used as visible light‐absorbing pigments in broad‐spectrum sunscreens . The color index (CI) classification is a system that promotes a universally accepted nomenclature for dyes and pigments that describes which numbers the exact color tone used as well as its chemical structure and properties …”

“…25 More recently, visible light (VL) has been implicated in development of melasma, especially in those with skin of colour. 28 Thus, for difficult to treat cases, the application of sunscreen, especially opaque ironoxide-containing sunscreens, should be considered. 26 Opaque sunscreens (e.g.…”

“…This may explain recurrence of melasma. 30 Therefore, further studies regarding the inflammatory profile in relation to onset, chronicity, use of bleaching agents, and exposure to different ranges of radiation are desirable, as this information may allow for preventive and therapeutic strategies for this disorder.…”
