Near-infrared laser mediated modulation of ice crystallization by two-dimensional nanosheets enables high-survival recovery of biological cells from cryogenic temperatures

Abstract: Two-dimensional (2D) graphene oxide (GO) and molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanosheets (NSs) have been widely used as photothermal agents and as potential carriers of antitumor drugs. Their spatial thermal effects have been extensively explored for use at physiological and hyperthermic temperatures (37 to 46 °C). Furthermore, the modulation of the spatial thermal distributions with these NSs may have even more profound applications in the microstructural control of biomaterials at cryogenic temperatures (-196 to … Show more

“…Furthermore, an alternative novel strategy for suppressing IR is improving the warming rate to decrease the formation of ice crystals during rewarming. Heating induced by NIR light (Figure c) or AMF (Figure d) can be employed to assist warming, thereby suppressing IR. , In the study, we developed an all-in-one platform for controlling ice recrystallization by functional materials and external physical fields (Figure e).…”

“…The small amount of backscattering off the surface of the GO–Fe 3 O 4 -containing solution is comparable to that of deionized water. However, the solution with carbon particles has photons mainly absorbed by particles near the solution surface . To further evaluate the photothermal and magnetothermal effects, the temperature increase of CPAs with GO–Fe 3 O 4 NCs was measured from 25 °C for 1 min under NIR and AMF.…”

“…It has promoted long-term storage of cell resources and banking "off-the-shelf" cell-based therapy products at large scale. Since hydrogel capsules supplement excellent cryopreservation, satisfactory outcomes of cell cryopreservation can be also achieved at reduced DMSO concentrations [59,102,103]. Droplet-based cell printing can improve cell vitrification and can be helpful to achieve high efficiency at low-CPA concentration and reduce CPA toxicity and osmotic stress during CPA loading and unloading process [86].…”
