NCAM: a surface marker for human small cell lung cancer cells

Abstract: Immunocytochemicaland immunochemical techniques were used to study the expression of the neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM) by human lung cancer cell lines. Intense surface staining for NCAM was found at light and electron microscopic levels on small cell lung cancer cells. The NCAM polypeptide of M, 140000 (NCAM 140) was detected by immunoblotting in all of 7 small cell lung cancer cell lines examined and in one out of two of the closely related large cell cancer cell lines: it was not detected in cell line… Show more

“…NCAM mRNA was also present in these cells during culture, when they underwent luteinization. NCAM mRNA was identified among RNA isolated from human small lung cell carcinoma cells (H69-), which were used as a positive control, but was absent in the human adenocarcinoma cell line A549 (negative control) [29].…”

“…It is well documented that these tumor cells express NCAM [29,[31][32][33]. The use of a eDNA probe for human NCAM obtained from this cell line became essential for the positive identification of human NCAM mRNA in human granulosa cells, because the sequences sibly including the follicle fluid [14], could participate in the regulation of cell separation by saturating cell-bound NCAM.…”

“…[15][16][17][18][19][20] CD56 is also expressed on approximately 88% of Merkel cell cancers (22 of 25 patients), more than 70% of multiple myeloma cases, as well as on many cases of ovarian cancer. [21][22][23][24][25] LM has been shown to have potent activity against CD56-positive multiple myeloma cell lines in vitro and xenografts in vivo, and is currently under clinical investigation in combination with lenalidomide/dexamethasone in patients with multiple myeloma.…”

“…Small cell lung cancer (SCLC), the most malignant of human lung tumors, displays neurosecretory characteristics [10,11]. These include the expression of voltagegated calcium channels [12][13][14] and the synaptic vesicle glycoprotein synaptophysin [11], and the release of neuropeptides such as bombesin/gastrin-releasing peptide, which are important autocrine growth factors [15].…”

In some cases the expression of neural antigens by the tumor initiates production of autoantibodies which then react with homologous targets in the nervous system, resulting in autoimmune disease.…”
