The U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM) exhibition known as Native Voices reflected Donald A.B. Lindberg M.D.’s keen and long-held desire to help improve public understanding of Native American health challenges and honor the culture, tradition, and healing ways of Native Peoples. A centerpiece of the exhibition was a large set of video interviews that Dr. Lindberg conducted with Native health and community leaders. Dr. Lindberg and his team engaged Native advisors in the exhibition development; sought Native input through Listening Circles, Tribal Consultations; and site visits, and made the video interviews accessible via interactive kiosks and iPads. For its time, this was state-of-the-art exhibition technology. The exhibition also included Native artifacts and art works to complement the videos, including a scale model of the iconic Hokule’a Native Hawaiian voyaging canoe, and a full-size Lummi Indian healing totem pole. The totem journeyed across the U.S. prior to its installation next to the NLM herbal garden in Bethesda, MD. A traveling version of the exhibition visited more than 130 venues in 40 States across the U.S. The interview clips and other content are accessible on the exhibition website, and the full-length interviews are retained in the NLM permanent video collection.

A surprising development over the past half-century has been the revival of the ancient tradition of shamanism. Evidence for the renaissance is everywhere. But what is going on? I offer a structural view, suggesting that a global-historical conjuncture is responsible. The most important structures of civilization-governments, religions, sciences-have all suffered from popular alienation, most recently failing to adequately address global crises, prompting many in developed and developing countries, facilitated by global infrastructure, to reach back to their ancient spiritual roots. At the same time, in response to popular alienation, currents within these very structures have converged to buoy the movement. Traditional shamans, for their part, in spite of criticism at home for teaching modern peoples, say that the spirits have played a key role in rekindling shamanic practices.

This article aims to examine the evolutionary relationship between totemism and Daoism crossculturally. A total of 519 people participated (195 Americans and 324 Chinese), which included 95 students at a Midwestern university and 100 individuals from Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk). There were 268 on-campus participants from a university on the East coast in mainland China, whereas 56 completed it online from East China. Participants were asked to complete the Daoist Thinking Style Questionnaire (DTSQ; see Cott, 2012) and Lee's Totemic Thinking Questionnaire (LTTQ; see Lee, 2014). We found that totemism was significantly correlated with Daoism, and that this relationship varied cross-culturally-more so for Americans than for the Chinese, which was moderated by the interaction between religiosity and Daoism. This may suggest that human beings survive and function well because of a close spiritual attachment to animals, plants, and other natural things, objects, or phenomena. However, future research will be needed.
