Nature of Genital Discharge and pH of Cervical Mucus and Uterine Flushing Before and After Treatment in Endometritis Affected Cows

Abstract: The nature of cervical mucus and the change in the pH of cervical mucus and uterine flushings in 72 crossbred cows were studied. Six groups (12 cows in each group) received treatment viz. 30 ml of 2 per cent Lugol's iodine (Group I), 30 ml PBS containing 100 µg of E.coli LPS (Group II), 2 mg of lysozyme (Group III), 500 mg of oyster glycogen (Group IV), 25 mg PGF 2 α (Group V) and 30 ml PBS intrauterine on the day of oestrus (Group VI, control). The mean pH value of the cervical mucus and uterine fluid before … Show more

“…The mean pH value revealed a significant decline towards normal in all the therapeutic groups from pre-treatment to post-treatment. This similar decline in the pH of cervico-vaginal mucus is seen in studies conducted by Palanisamy et al (2014) [22] and Puro et al (2018) [26] .…”

“…The pH value of genital discharge could be used for the diagnosis of endometritis in cattle (Palanisamy et al, 2014).In the present study pH value ranged from 8.53 to 8.57 before treatment. The change in pH of uterine fluid to the alkaline side is usually due to the presence of metabolites of bacteria and inflammatory exudates associated with uterine infection.…”

“…This may be due to the decrease of high pH value after theend of treatment noticed in our study for theCefazolin group. This decrease of pH value can be critical for the survival of sperm and fetus in the uterus (Palanisamy et al, 2014;Kumar et al, 2014).…”

“…The change in pH of uterine fluid to the alkaline side is usually due to the presence of metabolites of bacteria and inflammatory exudates associated with uterine infection. This increase of pH is not suitable for the survival of sperm and fetus in the uterus (Palanisamy et al, 2014;Kumar et al, 2014). In this study, the pH value decreased after treatment, and this reduction was significant after the first dose of Cefazolin, while Cephalexin needed two doses to be effective.…”
