Naturalness and Place in River Rehabilitation

Abstract: ABSTRACT. An authentic approach to river rehabilitation emphasizes concerns for the natural values of a given place. As landscape considerations fashion the physical template upon which biotic associations take place, various geomorphic issues must be addressed in framing rehabilitation activities that strive to improve river health. An open-ended approach to river classification promotes applications that appreciate the values of a given river, rather than pigeonholing reality. As the geomorphic structure of … Show more

“…Evaluations based on restricted time periods may miss considerable amounts of information that, properly used, could have led to modification of the entire restoration process and hopefully better restoration practices in the future, i.e., adaptive management (Williams 2011). Instead, cookbook solutions (Hilderbrand et al 2005, Fryirs andBrierley 2009), often nonoptimal, are likely to become overused. To solve this problem, a revised approach to funding and monitoring is required.…”

It is therefore important to understand landscape context and the differing operation of sediment cascades contingent upon the operation of both structural and transmission resistance (Brunsden, ; Fryirs & Brierley, ).…”
