Empirically, the physical spatial arrangement of places provides us with a clue about the likelihood for crime opportunities based on the principles of crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED). Although we know that the quality of the urban built environment influences people’s behavior, its measurement as a variable is not an easy task. In this study, we present and develop a set of urban built environment indicators (UBEIs) based on two datasets: building footprints and road networks at the neighborhood level in the city of Praia, Cape Verde. We selected the four most relevant UBEIs to create a single urban built environment indicator (CUBEI), and then, explored their relationships with five types of crime (i.e., burglary, robbery, mugging, residential robbery, and crimes involving weapons) using correlation and regression analysis. Our results showed a consistent and statistically significant relationship between different types of crimes with both the UBEIs and CUBEI, suggesting that a poor urban built environment is associated with an increase of all types of crimes investigated in this study. Thus, to minimize crime incidents, urban planners should rehabilitate or design neighborhoods from the earlier stage, considering the principles of CPTED and broken window theory (BWT).

The crime rate in Malaysia in increasing in every year, especially in the high-density residential area. This has brought the increase of awareness and concern on the security issues in the residential area from the residents. Thus, secure homes’ concept seems to become a dominant feature of Malaysian housing development projects today as it can improve the security criteria. However, people are still living in the fear of crime, especially in the urban areas due to the ineffectiveness of the crime prevention approaches. Therefore, this paper aims to explore the current practices of secure homes’ development and to evaluate their impacts. 129 relevant articles published between 2011 to 2020 have been collected to go through systematic literature review. The results show publications concerning on secure homes is having an exponential growth. Next, the findings showed that there are tangible criteria and intangible criteria that can reduce the crime rate significantly. The tangible criteria are surveillance, access control, territoriality and target hardening while the intangible criteria include the sense of community, and management and maintenance. The findings of this study further show that there were enough practical and theoretical proofs attesting to the desirability of secure homes as a veritable tool in residential neighborhood crime prevention. The results of this study can be used as the fundamental to develop a more effective and efficient crime prevention approach that not only apply the conventional approach but consider integrating current technologies which can greatly reduce the fear of crime.

Data on the decision-making process of residential burglars at the micro-level are scarce. Furthermore, to the best of our knowledge, none of the related studies have investigated multiple relationships between the design features of a target, a burglar's assessment of effort and risk involved in the crime, and the final decision on target selection. This study aimed to test the hypothesis that a burglar's judgment of how difficult (ease of intrusion) and how risky (risk of detection) it would be to break into a certain target may mediate the relationship between the target's design features and target selection. The experiment using virtual reality was conducted to obtain more credible data by maximizing the immersion of participants, and the collected data were analyzed using path analysis. The results showed that the assessment of ease of intrusion and risk of detection for a burglary target served as mediators between the design features of the target and the decision on target selection. This study also found that the ease of intrusion and risk of detection were not evaluated independently but instead had influential relationships. These results suggest that when developing design strategies for burglary prevention, it is important to check the overall level of ease and risk of the possible intrusion routes of a target and their correlation by considering various environmental factors around the intrusion routes.
