Erosion is an event of eroding soil that occurs naturally. However, human activities that change land use from natural (forestry, plantation, rural areas) to urban features can alter the erosion processes. Rapid calculation of erosion level for the wide area is necessary for the management and conservation planning. This research aims to analyze the erosion level in East Java area using USLE (Universal Soil Loss Equation) and GIS. The erosivity factor (R) is calculated from rainfall data. Vegetation factor (C) and the conservation factor (P) estimated from land use map. The length and slope factor (LS) are calculated from the ASTER GDEM2, and the erodibility factor (K) is obtained from interpretation of soil map. Furthermore, all factors were analysed to calculate erosion rate. The result shows that the average erosion rate in East Java regions is 10,30 tons/ha/year. The result also show that 78,71% area of East Java is classified as very low erosion rate (0-15 tons/ha/year); 10,75% classified as low erosion rate (15-60 tons/ha/year); 6,39% classified as moderate erosion rate (60-180 tons/ha/year); and 2,83% is severe type (180-480 tons/ha/year). Only 1,31% from the total area is classified as very severe erosion rate (>480 tons/ha/year). The result also shows that USLE can be used to facilitate rapid erosion prediction for wide area.

“…No Brasil, além de solos altamente erodíveis, alta erosividade e grande influência do fator topográfico, destacam-se a necessidade do estabelecimento de políticas de uso da terra, visando seu uso sustentável, tanto em área rural como urbana (SILVA et al, 2011). Ao se comparar as classes de ocorrência do PNE definidas por Bertoni e Lombardi Neto (2010) e suas áreas correspondentes, para a área de estudo, observa-se que 47,3% da área estudada são relativas à classe muito alta do potencial natural de erosão, 19,9% do total da área se distribuem na classe alta e moderada e 32,8% da área correspondem às classes baixa e muito baixa.…”

A compreensão de riscos ambientais relacionados à erosão do solo é de extrema importância e se apoia em estudos sobre o meio físico, que determinam o potencial natural de erosão (PNE). Este trabalho teve como objetivo a elaboração de mapas que caracterizam o meio físico e condicionam o Potencial Natural de Erosão, com o apoio de softwares como o GS+®, versão 7.0 e o SIG (Sistema de Informação Geográfica) ArcGIS® (10.2). Técnicas de geoprocessamento e de geoestatística foram utilizadas para verificar a existência e quantificar o grau de dependência espacial dos fatores que determinam o PNE, como a erodibilidade do solo (fator K), a erosividade da chuva (fator R), além da elaboração do mapa do fator topográfico (fator LS) das áreas periurbanas das nascentes da bacia hidrográfica do Córrego do Gambá, Monte Alto-SP. O mapa do PNE mostra que o predomínio de áreas classificadas como muito alta, sofreram maior influência do fator topográfico, mostrando que no município de Monte Alto se tem a necessidade de um planejamento do uso do solo e da expansão urbana, pois o elevado risco à erosão podem provocar prejuízos e impactos ambientais significativos. The erosion is a very complex problem that can damage environmental ecosystems and land productivity. The main objective of this study is to predict soil erosion in Watutela watershed after the earthquake using GIS combination with the USLE method. The results showed that the erosion hazard index in the Watutela watershed was between the low to high criteria. The danger of high erosion was found in empty land about 427.93 tons/ha/year. While on the other hand, low criteria occurred in the shrubs 26.07 tons/ha/year. The results obtained allow determining as the Palu City development zone and to minimize the erosion hazard index, soil, and water conservation needs to be done through reforestation, rehabilitation utilization of tree architecture models that function in controlling erosion and climate, especially in high erosion hazard class.
