Natural Parasitism and Release Efficiency of Trichogramma evanescens Westwood in Ostrinia nubilalis Hübner Attacking Maize in Turkey

Abstract: The natural parasitism rate and the release efficiency of the egg parasitoid, Trichogramma evanescens Westwood (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae), in the biological control of the European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis Hübner (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), was determined in field plots of maize in the Eastern Mediterranean, Turkey. Parasitoids were released in maize plots as parasitized eggs of laboratory-reared Ephestia kuehniella Zeller (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae). The parasitized eggs (n = 150,000) were released twi… Show more

“…High efficacy of plant protection proves not only that the plant protection product was effective, but also that the method of its application was correct. Compared to the results obtained by other researchers the level of efficacy of biological protection of maize against O. nubilalis with the use of Trichogramma was stable for 6 years. The unfavorable conditions of cultivation (continuous monoculture) had not reduced it.…”

“…achieved efficacy of 78–80%. Even higher figures (up to 96%) were related to the effects of using preparations containing T. evanescens in Turkey in a double application . Both quoted works present results of experiments conducted in relatively small areas, where the biopesticide was distributed manually.…”

“…In accordance with the requirements of integrated plant protection and the principles of sustainable agriculture, maize farmers resort to biological methods of reducing the population of O. nubilalis. Egg parasitoids of Lepidoptera, especially Trichogramma brassicae (Albert et al, 2008) and T. evanescens (Oztemiz, 2009), are considered efficient natural enemies of the corn borer. Various biopreparations containing Trichogramma are in use, designed for manual or machine application, including aerial spraying (Bereś, 2010;.…”
