Nationwide Acute Care Physical Therapist Practice Analysis Identifies Knowledge, Skills, and Behaviors That Reflect Acute Care Practice

Abstract: The results of this practice analysis describe distinct knowledge, skills, and behaviors specific for acute care physical therapy. The outcomes of the survey might assist in the development of professional (entry-level) acute care competencies, a petition for the recognition of specialization in acute care physical therapy, or both. In addition, the findings of this practice analysis could serve as the foundation for the development of residencies or fellowships in acute care practice.

“…We believe that our survey have succeeded in profiling the general status of ICU physical therapy practice in Jordan in a similar way Norrenberg and Vincent did regarding participants' demographics, training, and education, but our study neither explore the specific interventions used by therapists, nor show the availability of exclusive ICU physical therapists. A survey study in the United States was done to validate the knowledge, skills, and behaviour for acute care physical therapy practice (Gorman et al, ), to help in the foundation of residence or fellowships in acute care practice. Our results, although limited to the participating hospitals, provides basic information regarding acute care physical therapy in Jordan that can be used in future plans for the establishment of a residency or a fellowship programme.…”

“…First, physiotherapists working in community‐orthopaedics specialize in musculoskeletal conditions as opposed to other employment settings, such as hospital wards or rehabilitation facilities, which require a more holistic and heterogeneous knowledge, based on different disciplines in medicine and treating a variable mix of patients . Second, community practice is usually held in separate settings, where physiotherapists are the exclusive professional authority, whereas in acute care hospital wards, rehabilitation facilities, and child development clinics, physiotherapists are a part of a multidisciplinary team, working under various constraints that may influence their treatment approaches . Third, the convenience sample consisted of a large group of community‐orthopaedics physiotherapists (58%) and a few small groups that specialized in hospital practice (22%), rehabilitation (7%), and other (11%).…”

“…Recent studies have identified physiotherapy (PT) competencies required for the ICU setting and recommendations have been made to define a professional profile specifically for ICU physiotherapists (ICU-PTs) [1,[11][12][13][14][15]. Across these studies, consensus exists on the necessity for ICU-PTs to have knowledge and understanding of medication interaction, pathophysiology, ICU equipment (including mechanical ventilation modes), laboratory testing and imaging investigations.…”

“…Across these studies, consensus exists on the necessity for ICU-PTs to have knowledge and understanding of medication interaction, pathophysiology, ICU equipment (including mechanical ventilation modes), laboratory testing and imaging investigations. ICU-PTs should also be familiar with practicing PT within safety parameters and based on sound clinical reasoning [12][13][14][15][16].…”
