Objectives. Some correlations have been proposed between chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) and type and severity of nasal septal deviation. This study sought to compare the type and severity of nasal septal deviation between CRS patients undergoing functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) and asymptomatic controls using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Materials and Methods. This prospective case-control study evaluated 49 CRS patients who did not respond to pharmaceutical therapy and were candidates for FESS and 49 asymptomatic controls. All participants underwent CBCT and were inspected for septal deviation type and severity. Data were analyzed by the independent t-test and chi-square test. Results. The study population comprised of 58.25% males and 41.8% females, with a mean age of 33.74 ± 11.78 years. Significant correlations were noted between the presence of CRS and severity of septal deviation ( P = 0.007 ). Type of septal deviation had no significant correlation with the presence of CRS ( P = 0.443 ). Conclusion. Patients with CRS have significantly more severe nasal septal deviation. However, type of septal deviation is not correlated with CRS.

KBB Uygulamaları 2018;6(3):87-91. © 2018 İstanbul KBB-BBC Uzmanları Derneği Yayın Organı ÖZ Amaç: Bu çalışmada çocuk hastalarda nazal septum deviasyonu varlığı veya açılanmasının doğum şeklinden etkilenip etkilenmediği araştırıldı. Hastalar ve Yöntemler: Radyoloji kliniğimizin Görüntü Arşivleme ve İletişim Sistemi veri tabanı son beş yıl için geriye dönük olarak tarandı. Toplam 226 hastanın (100 erkek, 126 kız; ort. yaş 3.4±3.8 yıl; dağılım, 0-16 yıl) farklı endikasyonlar ile çekilmiş paranazal, maksillofasiyal veya temporal kemik bilgisayarlı tomografi görüntüleri değerlendirildi. Nazal cerrahi veya fasiyal travma öyküsü olanlar çalışma dışı bırakıldı. Hastaların doğum şekli ve görüntülemelerde nazal septum deviasyonu varlığı değerlendirildi. Deviasyonun orta hatta olan açısı ve uzaklığı ölçüldü. Bulgular: Hastaların 131'i (%58.0) normal yol ve 83'ü (36.7%) sezaryen ile doğmuştu, fakat 12 hastanın (%5.3) doğum şekline ulaşılamadı. Toplam 85 hastada (%37.6) septum deviasyonu saptandı. Normal yol ile doğan 131 çocuğun 46'sında (%35.11) ve sezaryen ile doğan 83 çocuğun 34'ünde (%40.96) septum deviasyonu saptandı. Doğum şekli ile septum deviasyonunun varlığı, açılanması veya orta hatta uzaklığı arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı ilişki saptanmazken deviasyon varlığı ve yaş arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı pozitif ilişki tespit edildi (p<0.001). Sonuç: Çalışma bulgularımıza göre, doğum şekli çocukluk çağı septum deviasyonu görülme sıklığı üzerinde etkili değildir. Anahtar sözcükler: Sezaryen; çocuk; deviasyon; nazal septum; normal doğum. ABSTR ACTObjectives: This study aims to investigate if the presence or angle of nasal septal deviation is affected by mode of delivery in children patients. Patients and Methods:We scanned the Picture Archiving and Communication System database of our radiology clinic retrospectively for the last five years. We evaluated the paranasal, maxillofacial or temporal bone computed tomography images of a total of 226 patients (100 males, 126 females; mean age 3.4±3.8 years; range, 0 to 16 years) that were performed with different indications. We excluded those with any history of nasal surgery or facial trauma. We evaluated patients' mode of delivery and presence of nasal septal deviation on the images. We measured the angle and distance of deviation with respect to the midline.Results: Of the patients, 131 (%58.0) were delivered normally and 83 (36.7%) were delivered by cesarean section while 12 (5.3%) patients' mode of delivery was not accessed. We detected septal deviation in a total of 85 (37.6%) patients. We detected septal deviation in 46 (35.11%) of 131 children delivered normally and in 34 (40.96%) of 83 children delivered by cesarean section.
