Nasal polyposis: Role of subclinical delayed food hypersensitivity

Abstract: Nasal polyposis is a common problem in otolaryngology. The cause remains unclear, and treatment with medication and surgery is often unsatisfactory. We present our controlled study, which suggests a strong association between food allergy and nasal polyposis. The study was conducted in 2 parts. A postal survey of 900 patients with nasal polyps showed 53 respondents (5.9%) had a known food allergy. In the prospective study, 80 nasal polyp patients and 36 control subjects completed intradermal tests for food all… Show more

“…The exact origin of NP is unknown. However, a variety of allergic, infectious, inflammatory, anatomic, and genetic factors are known to be involved as are autonomous dysfunction and ciliary, enzymatic, epithelial, and mucopolysaccharide abnormalities (12,13). No single pathogenic factor has been shown to apply to all types of polyps, although the potential mechanisms may converge on a single pathway.…”

“…A few studies show higher sensitization rates to foods in patients with CRSwNP compared to controls, but the clinical implications are not known. 892,893 Despite an overlap of immunologic pathways and of symptoms, conflicting data in the literature prevents definitive conclusion about the association between atopy and nasal polyposis. Well-designed, prospective studies with defined inclusion and exclusion criteria among defined populations should shed additional light on this relationship.…”

“…Si bien en los últimos años se ha retomado y profundizado el estudio de la hipersensibilidad a distintos alergenos (incluidos hongos y alimentos) en pacientes con poliposis nasosinusal [15][16][17] no existen datos clínicos ni epidemiológicos al respecto en nuestro país. Esta situación se ve favorecida por la ausencia habitual de alergenos fúngicos que pudieran ser relevantes en esta patología, en los exámenes alergológicos de rutina.…”
