Nasal congestion index: A measure for nasal obstruction

Abstract: We have clearly demonstrated an association between subjective nasal obstruction and reversible congestion of the nasal mucosa by employing the NCI. The measure has proven to be useful for evaluating patients with complaints of nasal obstruction.

“…While the former measures internal nasal volume and minimum cross-sectional areas, the latter measures the maximum nasal inspiratory flow during forced inspiration. The Nasal Congestion Index (NCI) has been suggested as a useful instrument for the evaluation of nasal obstruction by quantifying the effect of topical decongestants applied on the nasal mucosa [9]. There are few studies that have used these tools to investigate the relative contribution of subepithelial oedema and congestion of the venous sinusoids in asthmatics.…”

“…Nasal It is difficult for rhinologists to discern the severity of nasal congestion and inflammation of the nasal membranes [15]. VAS is frequently used as a subjective way to evaluate and describe the severity of this disease, but it can be influenced by many factors and varies between individuals [16]. In fact, VAS reflects the effects of PR, but seldom reveals the actual severity of nasal congestion and inflammation.…”

“…Nasal congestion index has been defined as the status of reversible congestion of the nasal mucosa as measured by peak flowmetry and acoustic rhinometry following nasal application of a topical decongestant (15). By measuring the NCI, the erectile function of the nasal lining can also be measured.…”
