Narrow-Band Imaging Flexible Cystoscopy in the Detection of Clinically Unconfirmed Positive Urine Cytology

Abstract: Introduction: The objective of this study was to investigate the value of narrow-band imaging (NBI) cystoscopy in the detection of patients with positive voided urine cytology (VUC) who have no evidence of disease after standard initial investigations. Patients and Methods: Between February 2009 and December 2010, 12 patients with positive or suspicious VUC but no regular endoscopic evidence of cancer were investigated with NBI flexible cystoscopy. All the specimens were biopsied both under NBI and white light… Show more

“…A total of 17 papers were considered for full‐text evaluation. However, two papers were reviews without detailed data, one described a project that was not carried out, three considered the treatment of NMIBC assisted by NBI and WLI, two had no biopsies as a reference standard of diagnosis, one discussed a diagnosis using NBI and WLI at two different times, and one had no data for any outcomes of interest . In all, seven studies including 1040 cases fulfilled the predefined inclusion criteria and were included in the final analysis (Fig.…”

“…Among cases of NMIBC, 17.1% tumors were detected by NBI only, whereas 1.9% tumors were found by WLI only [20]. Additionally, 42% patients with positive urine cytology and negative WLI cystoscopy presented with BCs when undergoing NBI cystoscopy [21]. NBI cystoscopy facilitates the early detection and diagnosis of small lesions, reducing the rate of residual tumors.…”
