“…In general, the present study gives further support to the claim that new meanings are important for change in psychotherapy (Gonçalves et al, ; Neimeyer & Bridges, ). New meanings in which people reconceptualize their experience are also probably similar to other concepts in other models as new accounts of the experience (Angus et al, ; Boritz, Bryntwick, Angus, Greenberg, & Constantino, ) or as meaning bridges in the assimilation of the problematic experience (Stiles, ). In fact, high‐level assimilation of the problematic experience stages (Stage 4 or higher) have been associated with Level 2 IMs (Gonçalves et al, ).…”

“…Related findings were obtained in a recent study on narrative processes in psychotherapy (Boritz, Bryntwick, Angus, Greenberg, & Constantino, 2013) that used a new narrative coding system-Narrative-Emotion Process Coding System (Boritz et al, 2013)-to analyse narrative and emotional processes in three different therapeutic approaches (EFT, CCT and CBT). The results revealed a significantly higher proportion of narrative-emotion process change markers in recovered than in unchanged cases.…”

“…Over the past 25 years, this HP research tradition has expanded to include specific process variables such as client-expressed emotional arousal (Warwar & Greenberg, 1999), emotional processing (Watson & Prosser, 2007), expressed empathy (Watson, 2007), client narrative integration (Boritz, Bryntwick, Angus, Greenberg, & Constantino, 2013), innovative moments , and reflective processing (Watson, Steckley, & McMullen, 2014). Additionally, discourse style and verbal response modes evidenced in humanistic therapeutic sessions have been examined in the work of Stiles (1979), Hill (1978, and Sachse (1992).…”

“…Technological advances have supported this work, as illustrated by Rogers' use of phonograph, and later wire recordings of therapy sessions in the 1940s. More recently, audio and video technology have made it possible to review, observe, and empirically analyze client and therapist performances for the rich, qualitative description of moment-to-moment therapeutic interactions, as they unfold within therapy sessions (Boritz et al, 2013).…”
