Naringenin Inhibits Adipogenesis and Reduces Insulin Sensitivity and Adiponectin Expression in Adipocytes

Abstract: Adipose tissue development and function are widely studied to examine the relationship between obesity and the metabolic syndrome. It is well documented that the inability of adipose tissue to properly increase its lipid storage capacity during the obese state can lead to metabolic dysfunction. In a blind screen of 425 botanicals, we identified naringenin as an inhibitor of adipocyte differentiation. Naringenin is one of the most abundant citrus flavonoids, and recent studies have demonstrated antihyperlipidem… Show more

“…PPAR γ , induces glucose and fatty acid uptake by directly or indirectly enhancing the transcription of genes encoding proteins such as, fatty acid binding proteins (aP2), GLUT4 [ 14 ], fatty acid transport proteins, and acyl-CoA synthetase. Recent studies indicate that partial PPAR γ antagonism by various flavonoids may be beneficial in improving insulin sensitivity and may also inhibit adipocyte differentiation and lipid accumulation [ 15 ].…”

“…EC-890, from National Diagnostics, Atlanta, GA) and transferred to nitrocellulose membranes (catalog no. 162-0115, Bio-Rad) as described previously (30). Results were visualized with horseradish peroxidase-conjugated secondary antibodies (Jackson ImmunoResearch) and enhanced chemiluminescence (Pierce/Thermo Fisher Scientific) (30) or IRDye-conjugated secondary antibodies (Licor Biosciences, Lincoln, NE) and scanned with the Odyssey infrared scanner (Licor Biosciences) (31).…”

“…It exhibits anti-atherosclerotic activity [16]. It has shown the inhibitory action to production of hepatitis C virus [17,18], and block insulin resistance [19,20]. Despite its wide therapeutic potential, NRG's clinical role has been hindered due to its its low solubility, hence poor bioavailability and a considerable pre-systemic metabolism.…”
