Nanotechnology in Enhanced Oil Recovery

Abstract: Nanoparticles (NPs) are known as important nanomaterials for a broad range of commercial and research applications owing to their physical characteristics and properties. Currently, the demand for NPs for use in enhanced oil recovery (EOR) is very high. The use of NPs can drastically benefit EOR by changing the wettability of the rock, improving the mobility of the oil drop and decreasing the interfacial tension (IFT) between oil/water. This paper focuses on a review of the application of NPs in the flooding p… Show more

“…The contact angle is the base of calculation of the surface free energy (SFE) which is the most important factor in the cohesive and adhesive of the asphalt mixture structure and is directly related to the moisture damage of asphalt pavement. The Contact Angle (CA) is a feature to quantify the wettability of solid surfaces when in contact with a droplet 61 . A CA value smaller or higher than 90° on a solid substrate shows a substrate is hydrophilic or hydrophobic, respectively.…”

“… 11 , 66 On the addition of 25 vol % CSNs to the solution, the contact angle further reduced to a value of 82°, which further decreased to a minimum value of 43° at 600 s. The reduction of the contact angle in the presence of nanoparticles could be attributed to the adsorption of nanoparticles on the interface. 67 , 68 The reduction in the contact angle clearly indicates the shifting of wettability from mixed wetting toward water-wet.…”

“…The most widely applied catalysts are heterogeneous catalysts based on transition metals, oxide, sulfide, carbide and phosphide nanoparticles, as well as metalized solid acids [36][37][38]. The possible approaches to apply the nanoparticles in various heavy oil production technologies were evaluated in a review article [39]. The main advantages of nanocatalysts over traditional ones is their huge surface area with the absence of a porous structure that can be clogged with coke-like compounds [40].…”
