Nanotechnology applications in urology: a review

Abstract: The objectives of this review are to discuss the current literature and summarise some of the promising areas with which nanotechnology may improve urological care. A Medline literature search was performed to elucidate all relevant studies of nanotechnology with specific attention to its application in urology. Urological applications of nanotechnology include its use in medical imaging, gene therapy, drug delivery, and photothermal ablation of tumours. In vitro and animal studies have shown initial encouragi… Show more

“…Nanoparticles, materials with a scale of 1 to 1,000 nm, have been developed rapidly in recent years. Nanomaterials are versatile in several research fields because of their characteristics, including a high surface-area-to-volume ratio, flexible construction, good biocompatibility, and biodegradability [ 14 ]. Nanomedicine, which incorporates different medical disciplines, has emerged as an especially promising discipline in the field of drug delivery.…”

“…Nanotechnology based treatment of malignancy is in its infancy but is rapidly developing. In genitourinary oncology, the use of nanotechnology as a carrier for drug delivery, laser ablation, gene therapy, and imaging has grown exponentially in the past decade . Nanoparticles serve as excellent drug‐delivery vehicles by isolating chemotherapeutic agents from the systemic environment, allowing for accumulation in solid tumours with leaky vasculature and impaired lymphatics, improving cellular uptake both passively, and through targeted therapy .…”

Nanoparticles serve as excellent drug‐delivery vehicles by isolating chemotherapeutic agents from the systemic environment, allowing for accumulation in solid tumours with leaky vasculature and impaired lymphatics, improving cellular uptake both passively, and through targeted therapy . Furthermore, the exploration of nanoparticles in conjunction with temperature‐based therapies, such as laser ablation and high‐intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU), has also been promising .…”
