Nanosized Mo-doped CeO2 enhances the electrocatalytic properties of the Pt anode catalyst in direct methanol fuel cells

Abstract: A novel Pt/Ce0.7Mo0.3O2−δ–C electrocatalyst has been developed for methanol oxidation. A direct methanol fuel cell integrating this catalyst as the anode catalyst showed superior power density compared to that with a state-of-the-art commercial Pt/C-JM catalyst.

“…37,38 The ratio I f : I b is used to evaluated the MOR performance of catalyst, i.e., larger I f : I b represents better poisoning tolerance and vice versa. 39 All PtCu/CeO 2 catalysts have higher I f : I b than Pt/C, illustrating the better poison tolerance of PtCu/CeO 2 . As shown in Table 1, PtCu/CeO 2 -21 has the highest I f : I b value of 1.27, which is 1.4 times higher than 0.92 of Pt/C.…”

“…Further, this kind of electronic interaction can be further reinforced by modulation of CeO 2 with heteroatoms. A straightforward route is to dope CeO 2 with transition elements with CO‐tolerance property, e. g. Mo or W. Mo‐doped CeO 2 (Ce 1–x Mo x O 2 ) solid solution was lately synthesized by a simple single‐step hydrothermal method . The negative surface charges of the support were obtained by regulation over pH value, which makes for the subsequent deposition and dispersion of Pt NPs under such strong electrostatic interaction.…”
