Nanoparticulate System for the Transdermal Delivery of Catechin as an Antihypercholesterol: In Vitro and In Vivo Evaluations

Abstract: Gambir (Uncaria Gambir, Roxb.) contains catechins that is often empirically used to treat various diseases. Catechins can reduce cholesterol levels by inhibiting coenzyme HMG-CoA reductase that plays a role in cholesterol metabolism. Research has been carried out covering the optimization of transethosomal catechins, the formulation of Transethosomal Catechin Gel (TCG) and Non-Transethosomal Catechin Gel (NTCG), which were then tested for catechin permeation from these gel preparations in vitro using Franz’s d… Show more

“…Glycyrrhizin inhibited the growth of clinical isolates of MRSA and MSSA, with MIC ranging from 32 to 512 µg/mL and 16 to 512 µg/mL, respectively [41]. Catechin (Peak 5) has been reported as the major compound in UG [42]. MIC values of catechin ranged from 78.1 to 156.2 µg/mL against clinical isolates of MRSA [43].…”

“…The receiving compartment was filled with phosphate buffer (pH 7.4) and connected to a bath set at 32 ± 0.5 °C under constant agitation at 100 rpm. The total time of the assay was 8 h, with sampling times (400 µL) of 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 4.0, 6.0, and 8.0 h, and volume replacement [ 77 ]. The total phenolic compound content was quantified using the Folin–Ciocalteu method [ 78 ].…”
