Nanocomposite Thermites with Calcium Iodate Oxidizer

Abstract: Iodine bearing reactive materials and fuel additives are being developed to inactivate harmful aerosolized spores and bacteria by combined thermal and chemical effects. Nanocomposite thermites with aluminum and boron serving as fuels and calcium iodate as an oxidizer were prepared by arrested reactive milling. Both materials contained 80 wt % of calcium iodate. Morphology and particle sizes of the prepared materials were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Both powders comprised particles f… Show more

“…Incorporation of iodinethe biocidal componentas a part of the oxidizer itself allows for high iodine content and increased biocidal efficiency in thermite mixtures. Several such oxidizers such as I 2 O 5 , Bi(IO 3 ) 2 , Cu(IO 3 ) 2 , Fe(IO 3 ) 2 , NaIO 3 , KIO 3 , and HIO 3 have been explored for energetic biocidal applications. These oxidizers either have low stability and undergo decomposition before a combustion event can occur, or have a relatively low-iodine-mass content. Calcium iodate is a promising candidate in that it has a high-iodine-mass content (∼65%), is relatively stable, and has low hygroscopicity relative to other iodine-containing oxidizers.…”

“…In an extended meaning, nanothermites are any combustible compositions containing a significant amount of metallic species, used as fuels or/and oxidizers, in form of fine powders. In the field of nanothermites, oxygenated metallic salts are more and more used as oxidizers instead of metallic oxides to improve reactivity [25][26][27][28][29].…”

“…These experiments follow, generally, the same methods as used to study combustion of individual metal particles or powder clouds. Particles are ignited, typically by a laser beam or while being injected in a flame; their combustion times and temperatures are measured based on their optical emission. Different methods were used to correlate the particle sizes and their combustion times.…”
