Nano-loaded natural killer cells as carriers of indocyanine green for synergetic cancer immunotherapy and phototherapy

Abstract: To improve the efficacy of traditional chemotherapy and radiotherapy and reduce their serious side effects, further efforts need to be exerted to identify better cancer therapeutic options that are effective, affordable, and acceptable to patients. In this study, a novel theranostic agent was produced to perform synergetic cancer immunotherapy and phototherapy. The theranostic agent, named natural killer (NK) cells carrying indocyanine green loaded liposomes was synthesized NK cells with ICG nanoparticles to s… Show more

“…These DAMPs include calreticulin (CRT) and heat shock proteins (HSP) 70 and HSP 90, adenosine triphosphate (ATP), and high mobility group box 1 (HMGB1). 3 , 4 CRT, HSP70, and HSP90 exposed to the surface of dying cells cooperated with the extracellular release of ATP and HMGB1 to provide immunogenic signals to the host immune system. This plays an important role in establishing antitumor immunity and immune memory.…”

“… 1 - 3 Immunotherapy is a new strategy for tumor therapy, including the use of T cell-activated cytokines, immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) or programmed cell death-1 (PD-1), programmed cell death ligand-1 (PD-L1), and chimeric antigen receptor T cell/NK cell (CAR-T/CAR-NK) cell therapy. 4 - 6 These strategies for immunotherapy do not destroy cancer cells directly. It is entirely dependent on activating the immune system to selectively control tumor growth.…”

“…In particular, increased infections due to the multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacterial species have significantly reduced the therapeutic efficiency of antibiotics [2] .Therefore, it is essential to explore alternative treatment strategies including the development of bactericidal agents to eradicate bacterial infections and eliminate the occurrence of novel drug resistance. Among all the new therapeutic strategies developed to resolve drug resistance issues, photo-responsive photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an attractive antibacterial approach, which is able to kill bacterial pathogens by generating highly cytotoxic reactive oxygen species (ROS) through photochemical reactions [3] , [4] , [5] , [6] . For phototherapy like PDT and PTT, the penetration depth for visible light or near-infrared light in the first window is around 1 cm.…”
