Myxofibrosarcoma of the thyroid gland

Abstract: Head and neck myxofibrosarcoma is rare. MRI is essential and should always precede treatment. Diagnosis is histological. There is elevated risk of local recurrence after resection, accompanied by worsening tumor grade, whence the need for accurate diagnosis, appropriate treatment and regular MRI follow-up.

“…Radical surgery combined with radiotherapy should be considered for all patients diagnosed with grade 2 or grade 3 MFS, and for those whose tumors show positive/close surgical resection margins [23]. Chemotherapy based on doxorubicin and ifosfamide has been used in tumor recurrence [7].…”

“…The incidence of MFS in the head and neck region is quite rare [15]. The reported cases of MFS in the head and neck region were mostly in the soft tissues, such as the Schneiderian membrane of the maxillary sinus [16], lining of the sphenoid sinus [17], parotid gland [18], thyroid gland [19], and pharynx [20]. MFS occurring intra-osseously in the head and neck region is exceedingly rare.…”

“…However, the 5-year local recurrence rate for MFS of the extremity is with 14.6% comparable to that of other soft tissue sarcoma (STS) subtypes [ 5 ]. To our knowledge, there are only 4 cases reported that involve the thyroid gland and that were diagnosed postoperatively (Table 1 ) [ 6 9 ].…”
