Background: Heliconias are commercially important flowers due to its abundance of shapes, sizes, and colors. In Mexico, however, this ornamental crop is not considered in the statistical yearbook of agricultural production. In addition, there is no research regarding the context of tropical floriculture. Objective: To explore all scientific contributions related to the cultivation of heliconias. Methodology: A bibliographic search was conducted in Redalyc, SciELO, Scopus and Google Scholar with the key word “heliconia.” After cleansing the database of similar results, we generated a final compilation of 42 papers, which were then subject to an analysis of textual content by using Nvivo 12 Plus software to identify the contributions by means of the following categories of analysis: Production, post-harvesting, and commercialization. The species of heliconias were also identified. Results: The content analysis showed that 73.71% of all scientific contributions correspond to the production category, 12.5 % to post-harvesting, and 13.88% to commercialization. For each category, different topics which guide the contributions were identified. We found 43 species of heliconias that were used for research purposes in the three categories of analysis. Implications: The analysis was limited only to scientific contributions explored. An analysis that considered other sources of information could have strengthened this analytical exercise. Conclusion: The scientific contributions regarding the cultivation of heliconias are mainly oriented to the production category, which demonstrates that the focus is on the improvement of the production process. On the contrary, the contributions on post-harvesting and commercialization are incipient; therefore, it is important to address these topics in future research.

Insect pests show phenotypic plasticity as a function of resource availability and limiting conditions. Although Rhynchophorus palmarum displays high variation in certain morphological traits, it is still not clear how and which of these are being filtered along agricultural management gradients in palm plantations. This study assesses the influence of biophysical structure of ornamental palm plantations and agrochemical use on morphological traits of adults in 15 permanent plots of ornamental palm plantations in Veracruz, Mexico. A total of 4972 adults were and their body length, pronotum width, rostrum length, and mesothorax depth were measured. Body length and mesothorax depth of adults of both sexes were greater in plantations with a high diversity of palm species and frequency of fertilizer use. Rostrum length of females increased as a function of palm density, and pronotum width of both sexes was positively related with the use of insecticides. Local characteristics of agricultural management of palm plantations might filter integrated, adaptative, and environment-specific phenotypes. This is the first ecological study of the south American palm weevil that provides new insights on the current intensive management of ornamental palm plantations that far from controlling, benefits current geographic expansion, demographic outbreak, and economic impact of this pest.

Ants respond fast to changes in soil conditions in agricultural fields, thus they represent a practical, cheap, clean, and accurate tool to diagnose soil fertility before planting a crop. This study assesses the capacity of richness, occurrence, and activity of ant assemblages to indicate soil physicochemical properties in chayote monoculture in Veracruz, Mexico. Sampling was performed in 15 1-ha-plots and was replicated three times before planting chayote from August to October. Ants were collected using pit-fall traps and determined soil properties were texture, density, contents of organic matter (OM), nitrogen (N), and phosphorous (P), pH, and electrical conductivity (EC). In total, 20,385 ant workers belonging to 51 species, 28 genera, 9 tribes and 6 subfamilies were collected. Species richness significantly explained contents of OM, N, and P in a three-weeks sampling. Species occurrence explained clay percentage in the one-week sampling, N, and P contents in the two-weeks sampling and the aforementioned and percentages of sand and silt in the three-weeks sampling. Ant activity predicted more soil properties in the one-week sampling than in those that lasted two and three weeks.Richness, occurrence, and activity of ant assemblages are valuable tools for diagnosing texture, contents of OM, N, and P, and pH of soil before planting chayote monoculture. It contributes to the understanding of the role that ants play in agricultural fields. Therefore, soil management practices should consider indication capacity of ant assemblages to ensure growth and development of morphological structures such roots, stems, leaves, shoots, and fruits of cultivated plants.
