“…17 A number of clinical and experimental studies have demonstrated a close relationship between the level of adrenergic activity and the development of left ventricular hypertrophy. [14][15][16][17] Catecholamines play an important role in the devel-opment and maintenance of left ventricular hypertrophy. Noradrenaline is implicated in the development of left ventricular hypertrophy.…”

“…An initial study 21 in 1971 described a dose-response curve to NE in which progressive increases in NE delivery resulted in increases in HR, blood pressure, cardiac output and total peripheral resistance. A later study by these authors 22 examined the effects of prolonged (6-63 weeks) NE infusion. A dose for infusion was chosen that did not produce hypertension.…”

“…Studies in experimental animals have suggested a possible link between cardiac hypertrophy and the sympathetic system. Experimentally, chronic nonhypertensive infusion of noradrenaline in dogs caused cardiac hypertrophy simulating hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (Blaufuss et al, 1975;Laks et al, 1973). The adrenergic system of the ventricular septum was initially different and responded differently to norepinephrine infusion over 3 months compared with that of the right and left ventricles before development of hypertrophy.…”

“…Recently it has been reported that the response of blood norepinephrine to postural change and cold pressor test is abnormal in patients with HCM ). An experimental study demonstrated that nonhypertensive infusion of norepinephrine into dogs introduced left ventricular hypertrophy (Laks et al, 1973) simulating hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (Blaufuss et al, 1975). These studies suggest that sympathetic abnormality exists in ASH and that it can influence cardiac hypertrophy.…”
