“…Myelolipoma is a unusual tumour of wild and domestic animals (Ikeda & Downey, 1972;Zimmer & Stair, 1983;Narama et al, 1985) and man (Noble et al, 1982), but is extremely rare in birds. There have been two reports of myelolipoma in five exotic birds (Andreasen et al, 1995;Latimer & Rakich, 1995).…”

“…Myelolipomas have been reported in the spleen, adrenal gland and/or liver of wild cats, small monkeys, dogs and man (Ikeda & Downey, 1972;Noble et al, 1982;Zimmer & Stair, 1983;Narama et al, 1985). Some authors considered that myelolipomas are not true tumours, but transformation of mesenchymal cells caused by chronic anaemia (Selye & Stone, 1950;Bingham et al, 1976), because the common sites of this tumour (the spleen, liver and adrenal) are potent haematopoietic organs, especially in foetal life (Narama et al, 1985).…”

“…In human beings, myelolipomas are usually found in the adrenal gland, and are observed in middle-aged to elderly patients, affecting females more often than males (Sato et al 2007). In animals, it has only been reported in nonhuman primates (Bingham et al 1976;Narama et al 1985;Kakinuma et al 1994;Yanai et al 1996), dogs (Zimmer and Stair 1983;Spangler et al 1994;Prater et al 1998;Newman et al 2000;Tursi et al 2005;Al-Rukibat and Bani Ismail 2006;Morandi et al 2007;Ueno et al 2007; Kamiie et al 2009), domestic cats (Gourley et al 1971;Sander and Langham 1972;Schuh 1987;McCaw et al 1990;Wouda et al 2010), a wild felid (Lombard et al 1968), and some birds (Latimer and Rakich 1995;Suzuki et al 2010). In both human beings and animals, extra-adrenal myelolipomas are very rare (Kakinuma et al 1994;Takizawa et al 1995).…”

“…Moreover, the majority of myelolipomas in dogs occur in the spleen (Zimmer and Stair 1983;Spangler et al 1994;AlRukibat and Bani Ismail 2006;Kamiie et al 2009). In nonhuman primates, there are some reports of myelolipoma in the liver or juxtarenal myelolipoma (Bingham et al 1976;Narama et al 1985;Kakinuma et al 1994).…”
