My Little Box, Oh My Little Box A Video-Netnographic Study On The Expression Of Values In Subscription-Based E-Commerce

Abstract: This paper focuses on the consumption experience of a cosmetics box issued from subscription-based e-commerce. On the basis of a netnographic analysis of videos and comments on YouTube, we highlight that the value typology developed by Holbrook (1999) applies to that new form of e-commerce and consumption experience.

“…Subscription services have been common as a business model in several industries, such as gym, telephone, internet or insurance, which are industries of high functionality where the consumer often needs only one supplier (Sharp et al , 2002). With subscription services, customers receive one or several products with a common theme delivered to home, relay shops or sales points, with a predetermined frequency and set price (Mimoun et al , 2015). Subscription services have been implemented by retailers since 1955; for example, Columbia House allows new customers to sign up to get eight records for a penny, leading to years-long contracts with significant product markups (Ewen, 2017).…”

“…The efficacy of such a technique is dependent on consumers’ involvement in the product category (Mumaw, 2011). In addition to curation and tryvertising, subscription-based services also rely on event sales by providing special offers to subscribers for a limited period of time (Mimoun et al , 2015).…”
