“…Wood smoke resembles the cigarette smoke in several of its contents and contains PAHs, and it has been reported that B(a)P (a congener of PAHs family) intake via biomass smoke is analogous to smoking several packs of cigarettes (Nalte et al 2001;Asita et al 1991). It is estimated that combustion of 1 kg wood emits about 1 mg B(a)P (Singh et al 2013 and reference therein), and total native PAHs in coal can be found in concentration of hundreds to thousands of milligrams per kilogram (Claxton 2014); the total suspended particles emitted from two packs of cigarette is 40 mg/m 3 (Dockery and Spengler 1981), whereas that from indoor biomass smoke is 10,000 mg/m 3 , which is many folds higher (Pandey et al 1989).…”

“…M.ixtures of these PAH in concentrations typical of the smoke condensates did not induce mutations. (Asita et al 1991) This does not necessarily absolve the PAH, since it has been reported that the addition of BaP to a tobacco tar did not increase its tumorigenic activity either, whereas a mixture of 17 P AH present in tobacco tars did so. (Wynder and Huffinann1968) Only a few of the PAR are implicated as mutagens or carcinogens (IARC 1996).…”

“…For instance, glyphosate alone rarely caused genetic damage in laboratory tests whereas roundup, a glyphosate product, was mutagenic (Rank et al, 1993). The mutagenic effects of the condensates of wood smoke have been demonstrated in S. typhimurium reverse mutation assays (Nagao et al, 1977;Kamens et al, 1984;Asita et al, 1991) and mutagenic polycylic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were detected in African smoked fish (Mossanda et al, 1979). All the three concentrations of Eriocephalus punctulatus smoke condensate (EPSC) tested in the present study with Allium cepa root tip meristem cells induced genotoxicity.…”
