Mutagenic compounds in an extract from Rutae Herba (Ruta graveolens L.). I. Mutagenicity is partially caused by furoquinoline alkaloids

Abstract: Mutagenicity testing of a commercial extract from Rutae Herba (Tinctura Rutae) revealed a strong effect in Salmonella typhimurium strain TA98 without S9 mix. In the presence of S9 mix only a weak response was observed. Moderate mutagenic effects were detected with and without S9 mix using strain TA100. The extract used contained the furoquinoline alkaloids dictamnine, gamma-fagarine, skimmianine, pteleine and kokusaginine, as indicated by g.c. and g.c.-m.s. analysis. The pure compounds exhibited a mutagenic ac… Show more

“…Contact dermatitis and photoxicity characterized by erythema, itching and burning of the skin is a common toxic effect, which is usually associated with all Ruta species (Gijon et al 1995;Heskel et al 1983). Mutagenicity of this plant has been found to be mediated by furoquinoline alkaloids and furocoumarins upon prolonged exposure to sunshine (Chimmer and Kuhne, 1990;Paulini et al 1987).…”

“…Also, the mutagenicity potential of eight plants including Combretum erythrophyllum, Gnidia kraussiana, and Barlerii randii, traditionally used in Zimbabwe has been demonstrated. The mutagenicity of extract from Ruta graveolens in Salmonella tester strain TA98, TA100 has been showed in the presence and absence of S9 mix due to the presence of furoquinoline alkaloids [82].…”
