Music for Relaxation: A Comparison Across Two Age Groups

Abstract: There are currently many types of music sold commercially that are branded as 'relaxation aids'. However, the claims that the music can induce psychological and physical relaxation are rarely validated on an empirical basis. This study investigated the effectiveness of a particular type of 'relaxation' music that we call Meditative Binaural Music (MBM), which incorporates binaurally recorded sounds, binaural beats, a slow tempo, and gradual changes. The effect of listening to MBM with and without binaural beat… Show more

“…Vários fatores relacionados à música, à pessoa e ao contexto contribuem para a experiência de respostas emocionais ligadas à determinada música, assim como mudanças associadas ao estado afetivo 108 . Já é sabido que a resposta positiva a uma música depende fortemente de sua familiaridade e preferência por essa música 11,12 , que pode estar ligada ao repertório de sequências de sons adquiridos ao longo da vida de um indivíduo, levando-o a moldar suas expectativas com base na probabilidade de que um som suceda outro 109 .…”

“…Although other studies have shown beneficial effects of music for those with stress and anxiety, we did not observe any associations between performance and stress or resilience within the music group. [9][10][11] That being said, it cannot be ruled out that the use of music may benefit some of these students and further study is warranted.…”

“…The use of music, for example, has been shown to have positive effects in therapy; memory formation; relaxation; and stress/anxiety/sleep in stressed populations. [9][10][11] Research has also investigated the use of classical music on test anxiety and exam performance in college students. 12 Although no significant results were found by this study, its authors hypothesized that self-selected music (rather than forcing a specific genre such as classical) may have resulted in different results.…”

“…The use of low frequencies was selected as it has been shown to contribute to relaxation by slowing the heart rate ( Halbert et al, 2018 ). In addition, the music was edited using binaural beats, in order to synchronize the brain waves in the specific regions of the Alpha, Theta and Delta waves, which are all related to experiencing deep relaxation, meditation, and resting states (Cooper et al, 2021; Lee-Harris et al, 2018 ; a sample of the music used in this study could be found in the supplementary materials ). Each participant played the musical track on their own (30 minutes), yet simultaneously.…”
