Music and Self-Awareness: A Relationship or Not?

Abstract: In this paper I reviewed two main themes: (1) how music can be used as a tool to increase an individual’s self-awareness (SA) and (2) how music and SA relates to individual and social psychology. To investigate these themes, I searched academic databases for music and its effects on SA at the individual and group level. This paper is focused on music in the context of therapy, development, neurobiology, the relationship between bodily sensations and conscious awareness, and group or social implications. “…Hartman and Conklin (2009) stated that 'among the available types of art, music is one of the most powerful because it can move the human spirit in emotional and physiological ways' (p. 50). Indeed, music has the power to regulate human emotions and can make a person smile, cry, relax, or renew their energy (Navarro, 2015). Even simple melodies can enter the mind and lyrics can be internalized as a mantra (Moran, 2018).…”

“…When a person listens to music, their cognitive ability to attend to a task is enhanced with resolve to achieve something, without altering the perception of the challenge at hand (Priest & Karageorghis, 2008). Thus, a music listener is more inclined to focus and see the task through more effectively and efficiently than without the presence of appropriate music stimuli, such as: upbeat and fast music for exercise, soft and calming music for relaxation, and simple classical orchestral pieces for cognitive tasks (Navarro, 2015).…”

“…Self-awareness can be achieved through role-playing and simulations (Krueger et al, 2017), which offers participants the opportunity to see different positions and to consider opposing views safely (Likierman, 2020). Exercises that focus on developing self-awareaness, such as listening to music (Navarro, 2015), can offer different viewpoints (Likierman, 2020) and assist with exercising good judgment. Music affects the listener's brain by stimulating hormone production, specifically in the limbic system (e.g., the amygdala), which results in the maintenance or shift to a more positive affective state, resulting in improved emotional, cognitive, and behavioral reactions (Navarro, 2015).…”

“…Further, listening to music affects an individual emotionally (Hunter & Schellenberg, 2010;Salimpoor et al, 2009). Transcendence (e.g., optimism) and temperance (e.g., calmness) often come as a result of the awareness brought to the affective system when listening to inspiring or relaxing songs, respectively (Navarro, 2015). The listener's emotional state is improved and physiological incoherence (i.e., heart rate variability and blood pressure) is reduced (Karageorghis & Priest, 2012).…”
