Muscle Soreness and Serum Creatine Kinase Activity Following Isometric, Eccentric, and Concentric Exercise

Abstract: Serum creatine kinase (CK) activity and subjective ratings of muscle soreness were assessed in 28 college women following three different arm flexion exercise regimens. The subjects were randomly assigned to an eccentric, isometric, or concentric exercise regimen. Each regimen was equated for total work time and work-to-rest ratio. Blood samples for determination of serum CK activity and perceived soreness ratings were obtained prior to and 5, 10, and 25 h following each exercise. Significant increases in perc… Show more

“…That is, eccentric (lengthening) contractions, which have a high force-to-fiber ratio, are the most effective in producing these reactions (18,19), and there is a positive correlation between intensity of eccentric contraction and magnitude of post-exercise alterations (20). Conversely, in FMS patients, high force levels may not be necessary to produce these abnormalities, since even moderate physical activity exacerbates the muscle symptoms (8).…”

“…Circulating levels of biomarkers can remain elevated anywhere from a few hours up to 1 to 2 weeks, depending on the magnitude and type of injury, and the biomarker being measured. 24,30,66,69,70,115,120,143 Proteins implicated as potential soft tissue injury biomarkers include the cytoplasmic proteins, creatine kinase (CK) and myoglobin, 24,30,66,69,70,115,120,143 and proteins that make up the contractile apparatus, including myosin and skeletal troponin I. 85,100,101,120,143 Elevated levels of biomarkers have been successfully monitored to indicate muscle damage in other injuries, including intense exercise, trauma, and orthopaedic surgery.…”

Our team is in the process of validating new biomarkers for peripheral muscle injury, starting by using a lumbar surgery model (where the muscle damage can be quantified) to measure the total CK, skeletal muscle CK (CK-MM), IL-6, and Oncostatin M. Our findings indicate that total serum CK peaks between 9 and 48 hours after surgery.…”
