Muscle-fiber characteristics in adult mouse-tongue muscles

Abstract: To clarify functions of the mouse-tongue muscles, proteins such as myocin heavy chain (MHC) 2a and MHC-2b, which are isoforms of the fast-twitch fiber type myosin heavy chain, in the lateral margin of the tongue were observed by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction and immunohistochemical analyses. The main MHC isoform in the superior longitudinal muscle of the tongue was MHC-2b, with the fastest function and the main MHC isoform in the transverse muscle of the tongue was MHC-2a. These findings sugg… Show more

“…The functional roles of these four isoforms have been clarified. Therefore, the functions of muscles can be elucidated by determining the composition of these four isoforms (1,5,6,10,16,19,23,28) (Table 1). In this study, we examined MyHC-perinatal to determine speed of differentiation of myoblasts, and MyHC-2b, 2d, 2a and 1 to ascertain muscle cell characteristics.…”

“…Reports concerning the expressions of each MyHC isoform in the course of muscle growth and development were mainly about extremities, but recently, reports about head and neck muscles such as masticatory muscle can be seen [5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13] . Gojo et al…”

“…The tongue muscle consists of fast muscle type 5,15,16) ; thus, MyHC-2b and MyHC-2a, which is considered to have the highest and lowest contractile rates among fast muscle type MyHC isoforms, respectively, were selected to investigate the muscle fiber characteristics 4) . HMGB1 was used as a marker to examine whether the carcinoma of tongue actually developed 18) .…”
