Murine B-cell subpopulations responsive to T-dependent and T-independent antigens.

Abstract: Strain A/J mice made secondary indirect plaque-forming cell (PFC) responses to azobenzenearsonate (ABA) conjugates of giant keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH), a thymic-dependent antigen, but not to conjugates of Ficoll, a T-independent antigen. ABA-Ficoll was also unable to elicit a response in animals primed with ABA-KLH, which have an expanded anti-ABA memory cell pool. On the other hand, ABA-Ficoll rendered mice unresponsive to ABA-KLH when administered before priming or boosting with the T-dependent immunoge… Show more

“…According to one view ) the SIg+C3+ precursor from marrow has SIg+C3-phenotype. T-cell help may be required for the differentiation of the SIg+C3+ B cell into a plasma-cell precursor (Lewis et al, 1976). Pro-plasma cells do not recirculate and they probably express SIg+ or SIg+CyIg+ profiles.…”

“…Antigen-binding cells were assayed by formation of rosettes between lymphocytes and haptenated sheep erythrocytes (ABA-SRBC) (Lewis et al 1976). Antigen-binding cells were assayed by formation of rosettes between lymphocytes and haptenated sheep erythrocytes (ABA-SRBC) (Lewis et al 1976).…”

“…A significant response to immunization with RAT itself could be shown only by an increase in antigen-binding lymphocytes; no significant delayed hypersensitivity by footpad swelling or lymphocyte transformation in vitro was observed. Antigen-binding cells were assayed by formation of rosettes between lymphocytes and haptenated sheep erythrocytes (ABA-SRBC) (Lewis et al 1976). The number of rosette-forming cells increases about 30-fold following immimization with RAT in CFA (Table III).…”

“…Thus, those B cells that give rise to antibody-producing cells can be divided into a subset that requires cooperation with T-derived lymphocytes and another subset that is T independent (1)(2)(3)(4)(5)(6). Recently, it has been shown that the B-cell population also contains suppressor cells that regulate various functions of T cells (7)(8)(9)(10)(11) and that these suppressor cells seem to be different from antibody-producing cells (10,11).…”
