Muon-catalyzedptfusion

Abstract: Gamma rays and, for the first time, conversion muons of pt fusion have been measured from liquid mixtures of protium, deuterium, and tritium. The rate Aio for spin flip from the triplet to the singlet state of t/i(ls) was found to be Aio = (1.06 ± 0.13) x 10^/xs~^, the rate for muon-catalyzed pt fusion from the (/ = 1) nuclear-spin state to be X{,t{I = I) = 0.067 ± 0.002 Ig;^^! Ms"\ and the molecular formation rate to be A^ = (7.5 d= 0.3 to.s) Ms"-^ (all rates normalized to liquid hydrogen density).

“…Our calculations of the cross sections have been performed for liquid hydrogen and deuterium at 22 K and saturated-vapor pressures, which corresponds to the conditions of the experiments performed at PSI [3,4] and JINR [12]. At 22 K, practically all symmetric molecules H 2 and D 2 are in the ground rotational state K = 0.…”

“…Many experiments in low-energy muon physics were performed in the liquid mixtures of hydrogen isotopes. In particular, such hydrogenic targets were employed for studying the muon-catalyzed pd and pt fusion in the muonic molecules pdµ and ptµ (see, e.g., [1][2][3][4][5]). The yields of different products from these fusion reactions strongly depend on the populations of hyperfine states of the muonic molecules.…”

“…(39) can be considered as the "formation rate" in the molecular CMS, which has been obtained upon the rate transformation from the nuclear CMS and then averaged over the momenta q of the nuclei with the distribution function g(ε Q ,ε), in accordance with Eqs. (38) and (11). Finally, Eq.…”

“…Since the total pt spin can be either 1 (initial state 1 + ) or 0 (0 + ) and the ground state of 4 He is 0 + , the possible transitions are 1 + → 0 + (M1) and 0 + → 0 + (E0). Experimental study of the reactions (1), (2) was made in the only experiment at PSI [2]. Events of reaction (3) with creation of electronÄpositron conversion pairs have not been observed by the authors.…”
