Experimental study of nuclear fusion reactions in a ptμ system

Abstract: By means of muon catalysis we study the phenomena in a pt fusion, which have been previously investigated in the only experiment and now are at the frontier of nuclear few-body physics. The experiment is aimed at measuring the yields of the reaction products: γ quanta, conversion muons and e + e − pairs. As a result, we plan to measure the pt-fusion partial product yields (ˇrst time for e + e − pairs) with accuracy not worse than 10%, and this will enable us to obtain the nuclear reaction rates in M1 and E0 tr… Show more

“…Our calculations of the cross sections have been performed for liquid hydrogen and deuterium at 22 K and saturated-vapor pressures, which corresponds to the conditions of the experiments performed at PSI [3,4] and JINR [12]. At 22 K, practically all symmetric molecules H 2 and D 2 are in the ground rotational state K = 0.…”

“…The obtained results can be applied for an accurate simulation of the new experimental study of muon-catalyzed pt fusion, which is underway at JINR in Dubna. This experiment has been planned in order to clarify the large discrepancies between theory and experiment in the ptµ case, and to observe more fusion channels (e.g., ptµ → 4 He + e + + e − ) for the first time [12,13].…”

“…The interpretation and analysis of the data obtained in various experiments with low-energy muons require a knowledge of the energy-dependent formation rates of various muonic hydrogen molecules. For example, in the studies of muon-catalyzed pt and tt fusion [4,5], in the PSI measurements [6,7] of the muon capture in the hydrogenisotope nuclei, as well as in the planned determination of the Zemach radius of proton by the FAMU collaboration [8] at RAL and by the CREMA collaboration [9] at PSI.…”
